B2: Pen Tool Practice

Find a cool image of a scene off of the internet of a reasonably complex thing: an animal, car, house, person's face, etc...  OR go around the school for 10 - 15 minutes and snap a cool picture of something. You will need to make a photo pass: see the "Photo Pass Instructions" tab at the top of the blog for instructions. You can use your phone to take a picture or get a camera from Mr. Brandt if cameras are available.

Then use the strategies learned from the violin lesson to complete the drawing over the top of your new image. This project should include much more detail and layers of color/value than the violin.

Here are several examples of student work:

A5: Unit Reflection

Blog a 3 - 5 paragraph reflection that addresses the inquiry questions. Also include a self-assessment based on the criteria; how did you score 1 - 8 on each strand?

Inquiry Questions:
Factual: In what forms can advertisement appear?
Conceptual: Can an image persuade someone to act?
Debatable: Should advertisements be regulated by the government?
Criterion:
A.iii: use acquired knowledge to purposefully inform artistic decisions in the process of creating artwork.

B.i: demonstrate the acquisition and development of the skills and techniques of the art form studied

B.ii: demonstrate the application of skills and techniques to create, perform and/or present art.

Here is a link to a rubric for you to score yourself on (copy and paste the strand of the level achieved onto your blog along with your reflection):  Click Here

A4: Truth in Advertising Project

At this point you should be fairly well equipped to use many basic Photoshop techniques. This is a full blown project where you will now use your techniques to create a satirical piece of artwork. Advertisements are often very misleading. Study the examples below closely to get a good understanding of the project.
Step 1: Find a magazine advertisement image on Google Image Search.
Step 2: Create a visual analysis and description of how the advertisement uses (often) imagery to convey meaning.
Step 3: Create a Photoshopped spoof of the advertisement; show what the advertisement might be like if it were being truthful. keeping in mind our discussion on intellectual property, appropriation and plagiarism: you must change the image at least 50%. If you would like to use a camera to take pictures that is great.
Make sure to use that refine edge tool with your selections!

Follow this tutorial that shows you how to set up your canvas and add comments:

When you include text in an image you must be very mindful. Here is the powerpoint from class for including text in images: Click Here

Identity Self Portrait Project
Compose 10 - 15 objects into a self portrait image. The objects should represent your interests. They should be cleanly cut out. The final image should be placed into a background that is a place that you identify with for some reason.

Here is a tutorial that you should watch as a primer on selection tools. If you have taken the course "Digital Photography" this may be review, but you should watch it just the same :)
Here is an example artwork that I created:
